01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

If you can’t settle on just one kind of castella, the Chatei no Zen set lets you try three. Visitors have described a trio of Zen, with its rich egg flavour; Ten, made with Uji matcha; and egg-mitsu. The slowly baked castella also has a pleasing crunch from the coarse sugar on top. Served with tea, it’s a set made for taking your time and comparing each variety.

For a hands-on dessert, consider the Otezukuri Parfait Yuzen or one of the seasonal parfaits. Diners who have tried the make-your-own parfait describe the fun of combining ice cream, kuromitsu syrup and red bean paste. Seasonal ingredients and ideas shape the sweets on offer, so the choices change with the time of year.

The seasonal cream anmitsu has been described as a colourful dish topped with watermelon, kiwi and jelly shaped like goldfish. One diner paired the set, which comes with a drink, with cold-brewed sencha and enjoyed its clean, refreshing taste. Other options when you’d like to choose a tea to go with your sweet include a hojicha parfait, matcha latte and Fuku shiruko.

Summer treats include matcha shaved ice, praised by one diner for its matcha flavour and fluffy ice, and Zen no Mizu Kuromitsu Hoshi, described as a combination of kuromitsu syrup and kinako roasted soybean flour. Choose a chilled sweet or take your time over castella, depending on the season and your mood.

The main branch on Muromachi Street is presented as a place to enjoy ochazuke and dessert in a historic building, and visitors have mentioned spending time there while looking out over the garden. You can also take home sweets such as castella, rather than enjoying everything in the tearoom.
